Top 5 Cars From 1960’s TV Shows

The love we have for cars and other vehicles is obvious. It touches every aspect of our lives and shows up in TV shows and movies. Cars, trucks and vehicles of all shapes and sizes have had roles on both the big screen and little screen over the years. Some productions were entirely based around one particular car, such as the hit show Knight Rider and the Stephen King movie Christine. This gave us the idea of showcasing some of these star struck vehicles in a series of blog posts here, broken down by decade. First up we’re counting down the Top 5 Cars from 1960’s TV shows - proving why the 60’s were the era of the Hot Rod.

5. The Beverly Hillbillies – 1921 Oldsmobile Model 43-A

We use the term car loosely here, referring to any vehicle featured in TV shows and this first one falls somewhere between a car and truck. It started it’s life as a 1921 Oldsmobile Touring Model 43-A but Hollywood auto customizer George Barris converted it into a truck for use on the Beverly Hillbillies. Max Baer Jr. who played Jethro on the series said it handled like you were driving a tank.

4. Route 66 – Various Corvette convertibles

Route 66 is one of the few TV shows shot in a different location nearly every week. And the stars not only got to take a corvette convertible around the country but each year the show was on the air from 1960 – 64 they got a brand new Vette to drive. Must have been rough! If you feel like cruising Route 66 you can do it in one of these classic corvettes.

3. The Monkees – 1966 Pontiac GTO

The Monkeemobile as it was called was a heavily modified GTO. Two nearly identical versions were built, both of which now belong to private collectors. After all the modifications, Pontiac paid a promotional fee to have the GTO insignia put back on the grill. If muscle cars are your thing, we have plenty to choose from. 2. The Munsters – Munster Koach

The Munsters Koach was the family car, appearing in more than 20 episodes of the series. It was made from three Ford Model T bodies and was 18 feet long. Only one original Koach was created for the series by George Barris, though a couple reproductions have been made since then.

1. Batman – Batmobile

The Batmobile featured in the 1960’s TV series started as a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car. Another one of George Barris’ creations, its conversion to the Batmobile was done in just three weeks at a cost of more than $200,000 in 2017 money. The car itself was no Superhero. When filming began it had a number of problems: The battery frequently died, it often overheated and it’s expensive tires repeatedly failed. If you feel like living out your own Superhero fantasies, check out the Batmobile in our showroom!
