This 1957 Rambler Custom Cross Country is a spectacularly restored station wagon that harkens back to a bygone era. In the middle of 1950, Nash Motors reintroduced its "Rambler" nameplate after a 36 year absence from the market, this time as a Nash model, the Nash Rambler. In its early years, the Nash Rambler was intended to fill a niche of a compact, economy-minded car that was both affordable and comfortable, and that reputation seemed to follow the Rambler as the years went on. A few years later in 1954, Nash merged with another American independent automaker, Hudson, to form the American Motors Corporation which was at the time the largest corporate merger in US history. By the time 1957 rolled around, the newly formed American Motors had started to more successfully integrate the predecessor companies but it was the final year of production for both Hudson and Nash. 1957 also marked the first year that "Rambler" was considered its own separate make under the AMC umbrella, as opposed to a model. There were essentially three separate lines under the Rambler marque, the Deluxe, the Super, and the Custom, with the Custom line being the highest appointed of the models with a few additional pieces of trim. The Custom came with either a V8 or the more economical Inline 6 cylinder. In fact, the Rambler 6 set a new record (certified by NASCAR) for its fuel economy when it drove coast to coast from Los Angeles to New York on less than 5 tanks of gas. Relatedly, a Rambler station wagons in 1957 was instead called "Cross Country" likely as a tribute to the impressive feat. This particular Rambler Custom Cross Country comes to us from a prominent collection where it spent nearly 15 years under that owner's stewardship. Under the hood is a 195.6 Cubic Inch Inline 6 cylinder engine paired with a single barrel carburetor sitting underneath the optional oil bath air cleaner that was said to push out 125 horsepower in its day. The 196 Inline 6 is backed by a Hydra-Matic Automatic transmission that ensures that just about anyone can take this Rambler station wagon for a spin around the block. The chrome and brightwork around the exterior of this Rambler Wagon is in fantastic shape and gives the car its distinctive look. The Smart Rooftop Travel Rack (i.e. roof-mounted luggage rack) further adds to the Cross County feel of this Ramble Station Wagon and this wagon even comes with several pieces of decorative period-type luggage. Riding on a set of optional wide whitewall tires with the optional full Rambler chrome wheelcovers, this Custom Six Station Wagon has a true 50s appearance. The exterior on this Rambler Custom Cross Country has been correctly refinished in a beautiful two-tone paint scheme consisting of Sierra Peach and Cinnamon Bronze Metallic, completing the exterior look of the car. The interior on this Rambler Cross Country Custom is absolutely stunning! The optional "Airliner" reclining front bench seat along with the rear bench have been correctly reupholstered in a beautiful Peach Vinyl with Black fabric inserts, matching the exterior look of the car. The black painted dash, Peach and Black upholstered door panels, black carpeting and steering wheel all appear to be in their stock configuration and all are in wonderful condition. The dash is equipped with a 110 MPH speedometer, temperature gauge, and fuel gauge, along with an indicator light for oil pressure and an optional clock. Whether you're buying your first classic car or you're adding to your existing classic station wagon collection, this 1957 Rambler Custom Cross Country Station Wagon would make an excellent addition.
